Abstract

Inspiring the next generation of planetary scientists through a publication in Frontiers for Young Minds

\tIn order to inspire the next generation of planetary scientists it is fundamental to capture, engage, and inspire young minds between the ages of 5-12, planting seeds that can foster a professional pursuit in the fields of science and exploration. Children today have very little exposure to actual scientific research. This is due to their limited exposure of published research, the inaccessible language in which the research is written, and a lack of physical access to both the science and the scientists who could otherwise stimulate interest and a potential career path. The journal Frontiers for Young Minds (https://kids.frontiersin.org/) provides a platform for cutting-edge science discoveries to be available for younger audiences. Distinguished scientists are invited to write about their cutting-edge discoveries in a language that is accessible for young readers, and the kids themselves provide feedback and explain to the authors how to best improve the articles for younger audiences. Twin fellow Daniel Leeb, Mission director of the Iceland Space Agency (ISA), will come to the HWK for one week to help build content for submission of an article to Frontiers for Young Minds. While here, he will work with Dr. Roy Price to reframe a recent publication from the Price laboratory, converting the research article into language that can be understood by a younger audience.
