Scientists and scholars may apply for any of the following residential academic fellowships:
- Regular fellowships, if your PhD dates back more than five years. Apply here
- Junior fellowships, if your PhD dates back less than five years. Apply here
- Associate Junior Fellowships (non-residential) are open to early career researchers from Northwest Germany only. Apply here
Artists with a keen interest in the sciences may apply as:
- Artist in Residence for residencies of typically 3-4 months Apply here
Non-fiction authors of works dealing with science as a topic may apply as

Notes on applications in the area of BRAIN & MIND
Scientists from the field of medical-clinical research or digitalisation in medicine are eligible to apply for a Joint Research Fellowship (duration: 6 months) in collaboration with the Oldenburg School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Notes on experimental research projects
Applicants who intend to carry out experimental or laboratory research must include in their applications details of their pre-agreed and binding access to research infrastructure at a regional research institution. Review the application guidelines for full eligibility criteria.

General Conditions for Scientific Fellowships
The Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg awards research fellowships of up to 10 months exclusively on the basis of applications proposing a research project to outstanding researchers at all career stages and from all disciplines. Applications must be submitted via the online application system. The selection process is single-stage. Residence at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg for the duration of the fellowship is required. The exact duration and financial scope of the individual fellowship are subject to agreement. Fellowships may not be taken up before the start of the year following the application. The HWK supports researchers accompanied by children and/or partners. Please read the full terms and conditions in the Application Guidelines.
