Living room in a fellow's apartment
Life at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg

Comfortable and comprehensively equipped apartments allow for comfortable living and concentration at work for both single researchers and families with children.

The quality of work is not only determined by that of the workplace. If spaces must accommodate both work and leisure, comfort and convenience matter, too. Those who have to concentrate on long-term scientific work will appreciate a tranquil environment and a living space that promotes focus as well as well-being in equal measure.

The Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg offers such an environment of living and working while its interdisciplinary atmosphere bringing together scientists, authors, and artists allows for stimulating encounters—in bright and spacious meeting rooms, in the bistro, in the gardens or even by the fireplace.

Individual Living

At the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg, fellows may concentrate fully on their work, if they choose to do so. In the main building, a total of 21 apartments from 50 to 80 square meters are available for individuals and couples. Each apartment is fully furnished and, in addition to a living area, has a study, bedroom, bathroom, and spacious kitchen. All apartments also offer a balcony or veranda.

All the apartments at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg are also equipped with high quality furniture, a TV and music system, and WiFi access.

Families at the HWK

Scientists with families do not have to leave their spouse or children behind when doing research in Delmenhorst. The separate "family house" houses up to 4 families with children. Each of the spacious apartments offer comfortable living conditions for up to 4 people. The family house is idyllically situated amidst fruit trees at the end of the spacious garden of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg in a particularly quiet place and close proximity to the separate office wing.

Moreover, the team of the Wissenschaftskolleg helps parents with finding places for their children in local schools or kindergartens. Children and their parents also enjoy free book-lending at the Delmenhorst city library. If you would like to clarify specific questions with regard to accommodation, please contact the Head of Program relevant to your field of research.

Fireside Room

The fireside room offers fellows a particularly comfortable retreat for studying newspapers or academic literature—and not only on cold days. The room also houses the library of books and articles published by the international alumni of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg and is often the right place for a chat over a glass of wine among colleagues.

Wellness Area

The wellness area of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg offers fellows sufficient space for the necessary balance from concentrated intellectual work. The separate building situated in a quiet part of the garden contains fitness equipment, a sauna with a rest area, and rooms for yoga and gymnastics. A table tennis table is also available as well as an outdoor lounge area by the forest.
