The Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg was built in the mid-nineties on the outskirts of Delmenhorst on the site of a former stately, upper middle-class villa from the Wilhelminian period. The former garden of the estate, together with the adjacent woodland, now forms a large part of the Wissenschaftskolleg's property.
