Future Renewable Energy Programs: Competences - Didactics - Curriculum

September 21 - 23, 277

Venue:

Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg
Lehmkuhlenbusch 4
27753 Delmenhorst

Organizers:

  • Dr. Herena Torío
Postgraduate Program Renwable Energy (Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg)
  • Evelyn Brudler
Coordination, Interdisciplinary Energy Education (Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg)

This Workshop seeks to

  • introduce the participating university teachers and young scientists to the debate on the implementation of competence-oriented teaching and participative learning processes
  • support a discussion on the field of “Education for Sustainable Development”: Do we address a person or the society?
  • promote the exchange of competences and experience amongst the participants of the workshop through common debates throughout three thematic sessions
  • make visible challenges and benefits within divers and complex teaching concepts

The field of Renewable Energy is a highly dynamic work and research field. The pace of suggested concepts on (near future) transformation schemes of the energy supply systems and the pace of technical developments carry high risks on societal scale. In order to achieve a sustainable transformation of the energy supply systems on regional, national and global scales an integrated knowledge about the ecological, economic and social consequences of the new energy systems will be needed.
All actors in this field are dealing, thus, with complexity, incomplete knowledge bases and various risks. Therefore it will be essential to equip the next generation of researchers, decision makers and executives with knowledge and competences in the above mentioned issues. In this context, the integration of inter- and transdisciplinary knowledge to develop sound and comprehensive assessments of proposed solutions will be one of the key competences needed to make informed, responsible and sustainable decisions in this area.
Whereas the promotion of these inter- and transdisciplinary competences in school science subjects is already being pursued under the model of “Education for Sustainable Development” (ESD), such competences are usually not or hardly considered in the natural science and engineering oriented university degree programmes.
The workshop is therefore devoted to the question of a target-oriented promotion of suitable skills and competences in degree courses in the area of renewable energies. For this purpose the potential of the ESD approach to university teaching in the context of curricular considerations, will be theoretically substantiated and scrutinized. In addition, didactical or methodological concepts will be discussed with a view to different forms of lectures and examinations that have a chance to support the necessary learning processes on the part of students.
