The GEOTRACES Arctic Cruise Planning Meeting held from June 8 to 10, 2009, brought together 35 geochemists from USA, Canada, China, Russia and the European Union at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg. GEOTRACES (<link http: www.geotraces.org externer-link-neues-fenster>www.geotraces.org) is an international program to study the detailed distribution of trace elements and isotopes in the world ocean.
During the first day reviews were presented of our present knowledge of water masses and tracer distributions in the Arctic Ocean. Results of recent expeditions and ship schedules for the near future were presented and in advocacy talks the participants had the opportunity to defend what they considered key scientific issues. The participants then set out to formulate in smaller groups the scientific questions to be answered and to sketch the optimal locations for future expeditions.
The workshop report will define the strategy for geochemical sampling in the Arctic Ocean and is expected to be the reference for future GEOTRACES expeditions to the Arctic. The workshop was funded by the European Cost Action (<link http: costaction.earth.ox.ac.uk externer-link-neues-fenster>costaction.earth.ox.ac.uk), US-GEOTRACES, the Scientific Committee of Ocean Research (SCOR), and the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg.
