Delmenhorst is located in the north-west of Germany, close to the city of Bremen. The nearest airport is Bremen (BRE). Delmenhorst can also be reached by regional trains and InterCity-trains. The HWK is located close to the motorway (“Autobahn”) easily accessible by car.
Please let the Head of Program responsible for your Fellowship know when you are planning to arrive at the HWK. If possible, please try to arrange an arrival time during regular business hours on a week day. The HWK Reception will be staffed, the Head of Program can show you around, shops will be open, and it is easier to get into the building. Please inform us ahead of time if you are planning to arrive late at night or on a weekend so that we can make the necessary arrangements.
Bremen Airport (BRE) is only 15 km (less than 10 miles) from the HWK. The airport is served by Lufthansa, Ryanair, KLM, Air France, Turkish Airlines, Swiss and other major airlines.
Please click here for more information on Bremen Airport
Depending on traffic, the trip to/ from the airport by taxi or car takes approximately 20-30 minutes. The cost will be around 40 EUR. Please note that taxis have to be paid in cash in Germany!
Delmenhorst is connected to the rail network by regional and InterCity trains. Trains between Delmenhorst and Bremen take ten to fifteen minutes, and between Oldenburg and Delmenhorst twenty to thirty minutes.
More information can be found on the internet pages of Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) in German, English, and other major languages. Train tickets can also be booked online on those pages.
From Delmenhorst railway station, the HWK can be reached easily by taxi or by bus (see below).
For more details on train travel, please read the section Getting around.
Taxis leave right in front of Bremen Airport and also in front of Delmenhorst train station. Usually several cars are waiting for passengers.
At Delmenhorst station, if there is no taxi available, we recommend calling the “City Taxi” service who will give you a discount when you mention that you are a guest of the HWK (8,50 EUR fixed price). Phone: 04221-98810.
The local bus system connects Delmenhorst train station with the HWK. Buses leave right in front of the city side of the train station, from the ZOB (Central Bus Terminal). The bus stop “Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg” is served by routes 203 and 206 on workdays and by route 216 in the evenings and on weekends and holidays. The direction is “Deichhorst”. You can also get current information on bus connections from the regional public transportation company VBN. Enter "Delmenhorst Bahnhof" as the starting point and "Delmenhorst Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg" as the destination, and you will get current departure times. Alternatively, you can also scan the QR code at the respective bus stop.
Buses 203 and 206 leave from platform “J”. Cross the street at the traffic lights, and then cross the first bus lane. Platform “J” is located slightly to your left.
Tickets can be purchased from the driver (please have change available) or during business hours at the customer center (the round greenish building with the “DELBUS” sign across from the station). A single ticket costs 2,20 EUR. For repeated travel during the day or over several days or for travel of several persons, consider buying day tickets or a package of 4 tickets which reduces the cost of each trip.
The journey from Delmenhorst railway station to the “Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg” bus stop takes approximately 15 minutes. Stops are announced visually and acoustically. You will have to push the “Stop” button to request a stop. From the bus stop, walk back about 100 m and then at the sign pointing to the "Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg" take a left into “Lehmkuhlenbusch”. Walk up the hill straight toward the HWK.
Once arrived, the institute provides shared tickets for public transportation in the region (Delmenhorst, Oldenburg, Bremen) for HWK Fellows.
For more details on public transportation, please read the section "Getting around".
The institute is located close to the motorway (Autobahn) A28 running between Bremen and Oldenburg. Take exit #21 "Delmenhorst-Deichhorst" and head towards the city center (Stadtmitte). HWK is signposted from the exit of the motorway. You will pass a roundabout (go straight on), and at the next traffic light, take a left turn into Lehmkuhlenbusch. The street takes you up a hill, and at the end of the cul-de-sac, there is the gate of the HWK. The parking space of the institute is on the right (please do not use other parking lots as they are part of the surrounding houses).
We kindly ask you to make your own travel arrangements (of course, all Heads of Program and assistants will be happy to help with useful tips and information). Please keep all invoices and receipts for reimbursement.
Provided you are entitled to reimbursement according to the terms stated in your Fellowship Agreement, you will receive a lump-sum reimbursement for your travel and shipping based on the country from where you will be travelling to Germany. You will receive a reimbursement form from the Head of Program or administrative assistant of your research field. Fill the form, print it and sign it. Then please submit the form along with your original receipts (e.g. printout of e-tickets, taxi receipt etc.) to the Head of Program responsible for your Fellowship.

You will receive a reimbursement form from the Head of Program or administrative assistant responsible for your field. Please fill and sign the form, enclose your receipts, and submit it to the Head of Program responsible for your Fellowship.
