A German-Japanese nano-optics workshop, which will take place from September 17 to 19, 2009 at the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK) in Delmenhorst, will give an overview of the newest research in this innovative research field. 35 scientists from Germany and Japan are expected to attend. Speakers include Prof. Dr. Motoichi Ohtsu, Director of the Nanophotonics Research Center in Tokyo and a pioneer of nano-optics, as well as Prof. Dr. Christoph Lienau, researcher at the Institute for Physics at the University of Oldenburg and head of the research group Ultrafast Nano-Optics. Guests are welcome to attend.
Nano-optics is a rapidly developing field of research which investigates the behavior of light in nanostructures. Nano-optic technologies and techniques are being applied increasingly in new microscopy techniques, in material and energy research, optoelectronics and optical data processing. Japanese and German research groups are world-wide leaders in this field. Because of its particular importance, German-Japanese collaboration in the field of nano-optics has recently received funding from the Japan Science and Technology Agency and the German Research Foundation in the form of a strategic bilateral collaborative program Nanoelectronics.
One project that was distinguished last year within this program is the project "Optical excitation transfer via optical near-field interactions: devices and characterizationsâ€, jointly submitted by Professor Motoichi Ohtsu at the University of Tokyo and Professor Christoph Lienau at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg.
