Europe – a transnational modernization project?

Principles, practices and challenges of an emerging European community

June 11 through 13, 2009
Conference at the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK)
Lehmkuhlenbusch 4
27753 Delmenhorst

The low voter turnout at the elections for the European Parliament shows that the people are distancing themselves from the European Union. Yet Europe affects the daily affairs of its citizens to a much greater extent than most people realize. Decisions made on the European level directly influence our lives. The institutions of the European Union make decisions in more and more policy areas on our future cooperation and coexistence. The integration of Europe creates new freedoms and provides new opportunities for interaction and cooperation. But it also brings with it new challenges for social solidarity and new risks for the realization of life’s opportunities.
These and further topics will be discussed thoroughly at an international symposium from June 11 to 13 at the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg. Renowned social scientists from the field of European research will exchange current research findings and discuss the dimensions of the social transition in today’s Europe. The emphasis will be on the question of a supposed crisis in the European integration project and its political implications.
