Abstract

The present proposal aims to counteract the increasing inequality in Malaysia’s education system that goes along with the rapid economic growth of the country . More specifically, the project addresses the problems of adolescent boys and girls to adequately regulate their behavior with respect to inhibiting undesirable impulses and actions and replacing them with more advantageous actions. When this ability of “inhibition” fails with respect to purely cognitive tasks (“Cool inhibition”), it compromises academic achievements and when it fails with respect to emotional situations (“Hot inhibition”) it affects the self regulation of social conduct and health-related behavior. Although of universal importance, in a superdiverse yet rapidly changing society as the Malaysian, self-regulation skills are of special importance. Since as yet, there are no reliable and valid

tools to assess these crucial abilities in adolescents, I aim to fill this gap by developing such a tool as the basis of targeted and effective interventions in the future. Hence, the project will contribute to two of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set forth by the United Nations, namely SDG 3, “Good health and well-being” and SDG 4, “Quality education”.
