Abstract

'Patchy Metabolisms' explores the intersection of art and science through the study of plankton ecology, ecological tipping points, and multispecies relationships, employing a critical ecological and hydrofeminist lens. By blending sensory and scientific approaches, the project challenges anthropocentric narratives and explores metabolism as a dynamic, relational process that weaves together biological, ecological, and cultural dimensions on a planetary scale.

In collaboration with researchers such as Dr. Josie Antonucci, the project engages with mesocosms and planktotrons—scientific instruments functioning as 'boundary objects' that bridge scientific, artistic, and public dialogues. By mediating and documenting experiences and findings between the controlled laboratory environment and the fluidity of natural ecosystems, the micro-performances of planktonic species are translated into visual, textual, and participatory formats. The key methods reveal the intricate, interdependent relationships within ecosystems, offering new perspectives on ecological interactions.

The final installation will take the form of a "metabolic patchwork," comprising interconnected islands that guide audiences through varying scales of life—from the microscopic to the planetary. Goal of the project is to foster multispecies care and engagement, inviting participants to explore the complexities of ecological relationships while emphasizing collective, embodied modes of ecological awareness.
