Abstract

This project aligns with global environmental missions in resolving the ecological burdens and ecotoxicological effects of tiny pieces of plastics, popularly known as microplastics and nanoplastics. Tire-wear particles, a form of microplastics generated from the abrasion of rubber tires while driving, contribute significantly to the overall plastic-related contaminations in urban atmospheres, soils, and polar and marine environments. Therefore, this project expects to develop a comprehensive understanding of the surface chemistry of tiny microplastics in the transportation sector by combining experiments with a broad cross-discipline engagement through the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Fellowship. The success of this project will yield new and consistent scientific protocols to support evidence-based decision-making about the toxicity and ecotoxicology of persistent radicals on the surface of microplastics. This should significantly benefit the environment, public health, and policy towards improving urban air and water quality.
